One of the things that must be considered when choosing a city in which to live is the people. Is the community one of which you want to be a part? The best way to answer that question is to spend time in the community. Another way to gather some of this information is to look at the demographics of the city.
Scottsdale, Arizona is home to just about 235,000 people according to the 2008 census estimates. That’s up significantly from the 202,000 registered by the 2000 census and the 130,000 recorded in 1990. That rapid population increase reflects Scottsdale’s status as one of the hottest real estate markets in the country prior to the current recession.
In 2000, the 202,000 residents of Scottsdale were split among a little over 90,000 housing units. Although the average number of people per household was 2.2, more than 30 percent of the housing units were occupied by a single person living alone. Just less than fifty percent were occupied by married couples.
Although many think of Scottsdale as a retirement destination, according the 2000 census only about one person in six, or 16.7 percent of the city’s population, was over the age of 65. 19.3 percent were under the age of eighteen. The largest age block was adults aged between 25 and 44 who represented fully 30.4 percent of Scottsdale residents.
Median household income in 2000 was $57,500 but by 2007 had risen more than 22.6 percent to $70,500. In 2000, 5.8 percent of Scottsdale residents lived with incomes below the official poverty line. That compares pretty favorably with the roughly 12 percent of Americans, nationally, whose income is below the poverty line.
According to numbers published in the Downtown Scottsdale Bulletin, almost 40% of the city’s workforce was employed in the tourism industry, making it the biggest economic contributor to the city by far. Part of the reason for this high concentration is the fact that many Americans from northern climates spend the winter in Scottsdale to escape the snow and cold temperatures of their own cities and towns.
Scottsdale also has a very active nightlife with a number of upscale nightclubs. A newspaper article by Jayne Clark published in USA Today in 2007 claimed that as many as 40,000 people flock to Scottsdale’s downtown bars and nightclubs during a weekend night. If all of those people where residents of Scottsdale, that would be better than one out of every five people who live in the city. Of course, Scottsdale’s residents are that active; the city’s reputation for nightlife draws people from surrounding towns as well.
All in all, though, Scottsdale is a relatively young, hip city. Excluding the current nationwide recessionary influences, the city and its economy were growing at a fast clip through 2007 and that growth should return once the national economy gets back on its feet. All the factors that made Scottsdale an attractive place to live and work just two years ago haven’t changed.

Nashville Tennessee is the cradle of country music in the United States. The city has made the careers of dozens if not hundreds of country music artists over the past fifty years and it was the Mecca of up-and-coming singers from all over the world.
Today, Nashville remains relevant in the world of country music. There are more recording studios, record executives, and open mike nights than almost anywhere else in the world. Big name stars still come to Nashville to perform and record, and Nashville is home to many celebrities, both in and outside of the country music field. Here are some of Nashville’s most famous country artist residents:
Barbara Mandrell began her country career with her top 10 hit in 1978, “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.” She is the only woman to have won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award twice and has gone on to win many more country music awards. Mandrell has also enjoyed a successful film career. She has recently been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Alan Jackson has sold more than 50 million country records to date in his illustrious career. He has had a string of more than 50 Billboard Country Top 30 singles. Jackson lives in Nashville with his wife and three daughters but is frequently on tour out of town.
Carrie Underwood was the winner of the fourth season of American Idol and has since gone on to more fame than any other Idol winner to date. Underwood has won multiple Grammy awards and has been inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Her first album, Some Hearts, remains country music’s highest-selling solo female debut album in history.
Dolly Parton is an icon of the country music industry. She has had 41 Top 10 albums to date in her career and is one of the most successful female country artist in history over her 45 year career. Parton lives with her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, in their Nashville mansion.
Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood maintain a house just outside of Nashville, although their primary residence is in Oklahoma. Brooks is the highest-selling solo artist in history surpassing even Elvis Presley. Brooks retired from writing and touring for several years but, since 2005, has begun actively performing and releasing new music again.
These and many of Nashville’s other famous residents can be seen regularly buying coffee, checking out new live music or even just grocery shopping around town. While many fans come to Nashville specifically to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars, it is always wise to remember manners when approaching one of their idols. Most celebrities are gracious around fans, but still appreciate the opportunity to dine in peace and to be able to buy a pack of gum without being accosted by fans. Respect boundaries, be polite and you may also get to see your favorite Nashville stars in their own habitat.
Where to Stay While on Temporary Assignment

- Corporate Housing
- Corporate Lodging
- Corporate Apartments
- Corporate Rentals
- Corporate Apartment
- Corporate Housing Washington D.C.
- Short Term Housing
At some point in your life, you may have to spend a month or more in a place away from home. You may be relocating for a new job, taking a temporary assignment either for your regular employer or as an independent contractor, or perhaps making an extended stay near relatives to help plan for a wedding. Whatever the reason, you’ll need to find a comfortable place to stay for a reasonable amount of money.
A hotel room can be comfortable for a couple of days, but when you’re talking about a month or more, a single room starts to get pretty cramped, not matter how much time you spend somewhere else. If the hotel has a multi-room suite available, that can be a little better, but a hotel suite can be pretty expensive, especially if you include the cost of eating out at restaurants two or three times a day.
Another option is to look for an apartment. If you can rent a place without a long term lease, you’ll have enough room to be comfortable and a full kitchen so you can buy groceries and cook your own meals. The problem here is furniture. You can move just enough furniture to be comfortable, but even that can be a giant hassle, or downright impossible unless you happen to have a spare bed in your permanent house so your wife doesn’t end up sleeping on the floor at the old place. You can always buy a simple cot or an inexpensive futon for your temporary apartment, but now the hassle factor is starting to climb again. Once you’re finished with the temporary assignment, you’re stuck with having to move everything back to your permanent home. You might get lucky and find a furnished apartment that you can rent on a month to month basis, but chances are you won’t find a big selection of these in any city so you may have to compromise on location.
Corporate lodging is one of the best choices. It combines the spaciousness of a furnished apartment with the convenience and amenities of a hotel. Corporate lodging generally offers fully furnished apartment units that come complete with everything from kitchens utensils to bed linens. Often these units will be in higher end residential buildings which will offer a pool and a gym for the use of residents. Corporate lodging companies make it their business to supply temporary accommodations to companies that frequently bring in employees from other locations for temporary assignments or companies that offer relocation packages to incoming employees. As such, they are used to dealing with short term stays, often requiring only a 30 day minimum commitment. Another bonus with corporate residential housing is that the utilities are usually all set before you move in. You don’t have to take time off to wait for the phone guy and the cable guy to show up and install anything.
Before you make other housing arrangements for a temporary assignment or extended visit, investigate corporate residential housing as an option in your new location, most major metropolitan areas will have at least one corporate housing service that can help you get settled quickly and comfortably.
