Advertising and promotion is a critical part of any company’s growth plan. They are one of the keystones of building new business and drawing in new customers. New customers are critical to almost every business’s growth strategies as they replenish older business that tapers off over time and ensures the future success of the company.
Advertising can be one of a company’s most costly methods to get new customers, however. Traditional venues such as phone book ads, radio spots and newspaper ads can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Getting a company’s name out there in front of target markets takes money and skill in equal measure. Many smaller companies suffer from a lack of both commodities.
In today’s shaky economy, many businesses are cutting back their expenses any way they can and advertising is usually one of the first expenses to go under the knife. That can hurt a business in the long run as an important source of new business is cut off. It’s why many businesses who survive the worst part of recessions struggle afterwards even when the economy picks up.
One method many companies are turning to in order to get in front of potential new business is the internet. Internet advertising has many advantages over traditional channels. It is extremely cost effective for the number of people it reaches. This works especially well for companies that can ship their product or who can provide services remotely. A newspaper ad is limited to the number of subscribers and casual readers in the local area. An online ad can reach anyone in the world who is interested in your product or service without limitations.
Online advertising can take many forms. It doesn’t have to be a purchased ad through Google or on specific websites. In fact, some of the “softer” information you put on the internet is likely to be more effective than a hard-sell ad. Your website, for example, is a perfect venue for presenting yourself, your company, and your products or services. Your website, unlike a paper brochure, is not limited in the amount of information you can include. You can add photos of your products, customer reviews, articles on how to use the products- the possibilities are truly endless.
There is one trick, however. Your website has to be seen by potential customers. That means that it has to come up in search engine searches when people are looking for what you are selling. It is not as simple as slapping up a website on the internet. In order for your website to be seen, search engines must “crawl” your website, determine which keywords are the most relevant to what the site is all about, and rank your site in searches. You can help your website be more web-friendly (called search engine optimization or SEO) by focusing your site on its main purpose. For example, if your site is all about the solar panels that your business sells, don’t include a lot of information on completely irrelevant things like your cats or poetry.
It used to be as easy as ensuring that your main keywords appeared a certain number of times to get good placement, but many search engine’s algorithms are far more sophisticated than that now. Search engines look at key phrases rather than just individual words. They also look at related words and phrases to determine the purpose of your site, incoming links from related sites, and many more factors in order to help them determine how to rank a website within their search engine results for a particular topic.
Using the internet to get your message out can provide an excellent return on investment if you get your website noticed by using good SEO techniques.
